Y’know, this business is a lot of work. It’s just a lot of work that happens to be a lot of fun! Since we’ve decided to include a video series on our website (look for Off Trail soon!) I’ve found that there isn’t any time to take a break anymore. Granted, this has been the most fun I’ve had in quite some time, but it isn’t without its pitfalls.
I started my season on August 25, opening day of archery for Oregon. My season ended September 19th, although the season officially ended September 23rd. So, for that month, I was up in the mountains hunting or back at the computer compiling and editing video every day. I saw my wife - maybe every other day. She’s been a trooper about it…I know it can’t be too much fun for her to stay at the house by herself (well, by herself except for her dog - who is probably better company than I am these days, and sadly, he probably smells better, too!) I admired her for trying to enjoy the experience in the field with me - she took the camera and followed me for two days up and down the mountains, but her legs just couldn’t look forward to doing it ever again.
When my season ended, it was because the camera had to change locations. Which meant I might have a few days to rest and unwind. Except I still had video to compile and edit. So, that’s how I spent the next few days. Then something exciting happened. I was allowed to take a camera and follow my aunt on a deer hunt in Oregon. So I packed my bags and away we went. So far we have nothing to show for our labor, but we’re confident a buck will show itself soon! I’m scheduled to follow my dad on a moose hunt in October, my uncle on a rifle elk hunt in November, and a whole passel of folks on an archery deer hunt in December. In between hunts, I work on putting together videos, podcasts, and these blog things. It has been an awesome adventure already and I look forward to each new adventure.
