The Lost Hunter of Yellow Pine

The guys over at Addicted to Hunting asked a question a few days ago.  And, while I’d like to prove my manly sense of direction and say I’ve never been lost, the sad truth is that I’d be lying if I told you that.

Spider Bull Debate

Let the debate begin - it isn’t hard to find information on the spider bull in Utah.  Unless you’ve been completely disconnected with society, you know about the spider bull and that it was killed recently.  As the debate heats up about this bull, we created a thread on our forum devoted to this bull.  Tell us what you think about the bull, the hunter, the guide, whatever - I’d certainly be interested to hear what everyone thinks about this situation - it is causing quite a stir in the state of Utah and its ripples are just now beginning to spread.  Click here to go to the forum and let us know your thoughts!

10/3/2008 9:20 AM MDT UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that the forum isn’t loading correctly in Firefox browsers.  This is likely due to the fact that we are currently undergoing a massive site redesign, so when that is completed , likely over the weekend, everything should return to its working state.  Thanks for your patience - and those of you who run on Internet Explorer, feel free to leave your spider bull comments now as it seems to work for IE users.

Bowhunting Is Like . . .

A comment from my brother sparked this post when we were discussing the anticipation before bow season begins.  He said, “Bowhunting is like being a Seattle Mariner’s fan.  Before the season you’re filled with such high expectations you can hardly stand it.  By mid season, those hopes have dwindled and you realize you might not get anything in return from your effort.  By the end of the season, you question your sanity and ask yourself, ‘why do I even care?’”

Unfailing Compass

After a rough day with the wind, my cousin made a comment that sparked just a hint of laughter from Ray and I as we trudged through the canyon’s vines and shrubs.  It had been a long day in which every direction we turned seemed to find us walking with the wind at our back.  I squeezed my little wind indicator and the puff of powder drifted in the direction we were headed.  Cody, tired of seeing it happen time and again all day long, muttered, “You know, I wonder what aliens would think if they were watching us right now.  I bet they’d make a strong case that this little wind indicator is some sort of compass.  I can see them now - ‘Well, they always do seem to go in the direction the powder blows.’”

Raining Rubber Ducks

I got a call last night from a friend who was pretty shook up as they had a limb come out of their Silver Maple tree for no apparent reason. No one really knows how old this tree is but it is beautiful and appears, on the outside, to be healthy. The reason Dave was shook up is because this is the second time this has happened in the last couple months and It landed in his children’s play area. We aren’t talking little here. This limb was over two foot through and laid 20 foot in his yard and almost reached entirely across his neighbor’s yard, destroying a fence, a peach tree, neighbor’s shed and half of their garden. I never measured the base of the trunk, but it would be between 10 and 12 feet through. So why am I talking about a tree?

Fuel For the Fire

I want to direct everyone’s attention to the newly created links page on Base Camp Legends. Sometimes, blog ideas are very hard to come by, but I can always turn to one of these blogs for a little fuel for my brain to get me headed in the right direction for a blog post. These are the blogs I read on a daily basis, and I find them all entertaining, most of them informative, and each of them completely valuable. If you’d like to be included in the list, let me know - I’m sure there are a great number of blogs that I’ve not been introduced to!

Stories From Elk Camp - Round 2

Well, yesterday I recapped my day hiking fruitlessly through some very rough country and John’s experience when he nearly tagged a beauty of a bull.  Well, we weren’t the only ones with stories to tell when we came back to camp that evening.  My cousin, Cody, was not to be outdone.

Stories From Elk Camp

On Wednesday, I decided to step out from behind the camera and do a little hunting of my own.  My original intent was to head into a canyon that I called in a nice bull a few years ago, but when I ran into another hunter near the canyon that informed me those were his plans, I backed off and decided to take the plunge into the very depths of the canyon that had to be partly responsible for the naming of this place, Hell’s Canyon.
