Freeway Elk

I was reminded this morning why I love living in the west. On the way in to work this morning I was listening to the radio and this is what they were saying. “If anyone is traveling I-84 between Boise and Mountain Home, be on the lookout somewhere around mile post 84 for 1000 head of elk that have been in that vacinity.” When was the last time you saw 1000 elk in one herd? I never have, but I’m sure it’s an awsome sight. So this is a bonus for the sight seers, but I’m sure its a real head ache for the Idaho Dept. of Transportation as well as the Idaho Fish and Game. On second thought I got to asking myself why all these elk are congregating down along the freeway. Deep snow in the high country I’m sure has a little to do with them being out of the mountains and down on the prairie floor. We have also observed that where wolves are present that the wildlife will edge in towards human populations. Evidently they feel safer among human preditors then they do with their 4 legged nemisis. Interesting news item though, don’t you think?

I’ll admit for sure that has got to be quite a sight! An interesting place for elk to be, too - at least in my mind. Man, there just ain’t anything out in that country!

Yeah it is quite a site. The elk come down there quite often. I remember first seeing them comming home from Idaho State University back in my college days and then the winter I was working out on the Mountain Home Air Force Base the were out there quite often. The first time I saw elk there I had to do a double take. There were a couple of cows and calves playing around in a puddle of water right between the east and west bound lanes of the freeway.
