Fastest Trigger in the West

This post from the blog, From the Stand gave me some amusement. If my dad were here instead of scouting for a mountain goat, he’d have jumped all over this story. Since he’s not here, I will take it upon myself to tell on myself. As a fellow videographer, I can understand the tension and panic when it seems the person you’re filming is not going to take the shot and the animal is getting away.

The 300 pound elk call

Sometimes life shoots you a little curve and all you can do is smile and go on. I don’t know how long its been since I’ve really been embarassed, but a couple weeks ago I actually got caught in an embarrassing situation and it all started with my closet no less.

Oregon Record Buck

Jim Gaskins over at Jim’s Outdoor Blog was kind enough to send me a great story about the new Oregon state record for archery mule deer in velvet. This story blew my mind - because of the story behind the hunt, the size of the animal, and Jim’s creative …

In Memory…

In memory of Dawnita
One year ago on Saturday, our family said goodbye to Dawnita. She was our only daughter, my three sons’ only sister, and a very special girl to many others. So as I sit down to write its hard to think of …

I’m much too Young….

You all know how the Garth Brooks song goes - Well, this post from Cory over at Outdoors International got me to thinking about the sad state of me. I can’t remember ever being concerned about being in shape before. It just flat never was something for me to worry about. Other people worried about it - not me. I was a basketball playin’, baseball playin’, hikin’, sometimes hyper, always active teenager. When hunting season rolled around, I went hunting without thought of whether I was in shape for it or not. Now, with this one post, Cory brought my world tumbling down around me.

Hunting in the Ocean

Over the 4th of July, Shanna and I packed our dog and our gear and headed to the Oregon coast. It was to be a trip for relaxation with some of her family that we’d not seen in a while, and we were certainly looking forward to it. I was slightly bemoaning the fact that I don’t know anything about surf fishing - because I wouldn’t have minded getting some fishing in while we were there!

Roots - Part Two

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable 4th of July. This is part two of my first hunt to the Steens Mountains in Oregon. You can read part one, if you missed it, here.

The next morning, Todd and I wanted to start out right away, while Dad had to take care of Dad things and clean up around camp. Todd and I headed out going straight up the mountain and when we’d climbed another 1,000 feet in elevation, we’d seen over twenty deer - all does. A large herd of deer veered back down the ridge too far away to tell what they were and Todd wanted to head their way.

Roots - Part One

My roots in hunting go deep, but there are two areas in Oregon that have been steeped in my family’s history so as to become part of us. I wrote about one of those in a three part series. That was our family’s elk hunting tradition - and Dad wrote about the other, the Steens Mountains, yesterday. Every male in my family has killed a Steens Mountain buck - in fact, both my brothers claim it as home to their first buck. I have had just two trips in this wild and rugged mountain.

Episode 9 - Oregon Mule Deer

This is a repost of our second episode of Off Trail - This mule deer hunt with my cousin, Cody, was originally posted when there were not many Base Camp Legends visitors, so I decided to re-edit the video and post it. Our first episode, it was pointed …

Buck Fever

Where does a person start, thinking back on fifty plus years of hunting, fishing and in general just being in the outdoors?  There have been so many things that have happened that have brought me to laughter, taught me lifelong lessons, given me great memories, made me feel just plain good, and some have left me with regret and some have even left me speechless, but that is getting out in the outdoors and I’ve loved it all. It’s life beyond the sidewalks, the pavement and computers when we see, we feel and we hear the outdoors in the raw. It calls every year and I’m glad it does as it helps heal the wounds of our daily lives and brings things back into proper perspective.
